Depth Beyond One´s - Ebb
Depth Beyond One's has started their journey with great ambition. With their second promo
the group is bringing boldly forth a concept-EP full of fastly turning and bouncing
sort-of-metal. These five guys from Oulu, Finland, mix their soup with everything found
in the spice shelf. The result is, wonder how to say, maybe fascinatingly odd.
Ebb tells a story in three parts about a family which is totally confused after the mother has died.
Furious Grand Lapse starts the story as it is supposed to: pulling the
listener into it. Immediately after the beginning it is clear that anything could be
coming forth. It is also clear that the group has talent in playing. At some points the
band bounces heavily like Meshuggah and the next point everything calms down to grunge-
like chorus, which reminds me of Finnish band Rust. Eventhough the going gets rough, it
is still far from getting lost. Wept Thoughts offers a safe haven from the storm for a
while and maybe the best moments on the promo. The story ends in the song "A Human decay"
which tells about the the dad going mad.
DBO is full of potential and skills in playing. Especially the playing and co-operation
of the bassist Jarru Kanniainen and the drummer Jani Kuorikoski is admirable. It is damn
grooving. Also I need to raise the hat for not falling in to having any prejustices
of where to go musically. In my opinion, this depressing theme would've needed more of
those agression bursts. The balance is a bit too much on the easier side for my taste.
Anyway, DBO is a very interesting new name from which can be expected much in the future.
